Apply discount code

Apply discount code adds a code to checkout for the customer, with nothing shown on the page. Pair it with display rules to apply a code only in certain situations, such as a minimum spend or a particular product in the cart.

Requires: Shopify Plus and the Business plan.

Discount code to apply automatically	The code to apply. It must already exist in Shopify.
Apply discount code only once per checkout session	Apply the code once. If the customer removes it, it stays removed.

Set it up

1. Create the discount code in Shopify admin, or as a Checkout Buddy discount code function.
2. Create an Apply discount code block with that code.
3. Add display rules for when it should apply.
4. Add it to checkout with its ID in Fixed block ID. Place it on the first step of checkout, anywhere on the page. It’s invisible.

Things to know

• Without “only once”, a removed code can come back. The block re-applies the code whenever checkout changes and its rules still pass. Tick Apply discount code only once per checkout session if customers should be able to remove it.
• The block only applies the code. It doesn’t remove it when the rules stop passing. Pair it with a Remove discount code block for that.
• If the code is invalid, expired, or not eligible, nothing happens and nothing is shown.
• The code is applied when the page with the block loads. Customers using an express checkout, such as Shop Pay from the cart page, skip it.
• Automatic discounts are usually simpler. If the discount should always apply under the same conditions, an automatic discount function (for example an order discount) applies on the server with no block needed.

Note

Re-saving the block resets “only once”, so customers who removed the code will get it again on their next visit.
